Boys make improvements with several personal-bests
By Ben Crane
It was the Lia Patterson show at Illinois State University on Friday as she picked up two firsts and a third at the Cogdal Girl’s Invite at Horton Field House.
Patterson took third in the 60 meter in a personal-best 7.89 second performance, first in the 60m hurdles with a 9.23s mark, and another win in the 200m with a 26.08s sprint.
Kali Gilpin, who finished 37th in the 60m, respectively, marked a personal-best 9.27s while Makayela Sexson, who placed 36th in the 200m, respectively, registered a 30.82 personal-best.
Reese Davis and Chloe Bowden finished 14th and 19th in the 400m, both timing personal-bests with 1:06.98 and 1:09.01, respectively.
Anne Brazzell posted a season-best 3:29.52 in the 800m, good for 40th place.
In the field events, Rylie Vanausdoll and Kenna Clodfelder placed in both long and triple jump. Vanausdoll finished first in the triple jump with a personal-best 11.31m jump and fourth in the long jump with a 4.77m performance.
Clodfelder put in a season-best 10.13m jump in the triple, good for fourth and picked up a fifth-place finish in the long with a 4.76m lunge.
In the high jump, Gilpin finished 13th with a personal-best 1.43m leap while Olivia Wallace hurled a 9.18m throw in the shot put, good for 11th.
“I was very, very pleased all around with the performances,” girls coach Drew Sterkel said. “Reese Davis had a standout debut, jumping into our top 10 since 2010 in the 400 after just coming off basketball, then running a phenomenal leg in the 4×200. Rylie Vanausdoll broke her own school record in the triple, Lia set a PR in the 60m, and a lot of our young athletes gained confidence and experience. That’s what these indoor meets are all about — learning and taking those first steps.”
In the boy’s side of the Cogdal, which took place on Saturday, Kam Flenner placed seventh in the 60m with a 7.24s personal-best while Carter Simpson marked a personal-best 8.82s 60m hurdle time, which was good for sixth.
Kade Wilcox and Keller Beachy both marked personal-bests in the 200m with a 25.21s, 19th place finish and a 25.95, 31st place finish, respectively.
Wilcox also marked a personal-best in the 400m with a 57.34s dash, good for 20th. Lawson Kurtz registered a personal-best in the same race with a 29th place 59.36s.
Michael Picazo came in 32nd in a personal-best 2:21.76 in the 800m while Xander Neamtu finished 9th in the 1600m with a personal-best 4:47.30.
Flenner, Simpson, David Hornaday, and Dylan Graves raced a personal-best 1:37.64 in the 4x200m relay, good for fifth while Blake McCleese, Boyd Brewer, Neamtu, and James Jonas finished seventh in the 4x800m relay with a 9:14.95.
In the shot put, Sawyer Woodard finished fifth with a 15.04m throw while Trey Waldrop finished 12th with a 13.10m.
“It as a pretty productive Saturday,” said boys coach Ryan Hornaday. “It’s good to race at a collegiate venue. Had a few basketball guys in their first races of the new season. Sawyer Woodard was the highest placing 1A competitor in the shot put. Finished fifth overall, top four were from considerably larger schools. Carter Simpson ran the fastest we’ve ever had in the 60 hurdles. Kamden Flenner did the same in the 60 dash and both look great headed into top times (indoor state) on Friday. The relays all ran solid indoor season bests same for Xander in the mile.”
