On April 5, Becca Dickens, co-owner of Regenerative Life Farm, came to speak at the Arthur Library about local food and sustainability. Becca, who is also a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, has a devotion to food as medicine.
She talked about how plants communicate with one another when under duress to help save the other plants. She also talked about:
1.) Good soil vs bad soil. Did you know your soil is bad if you see dandelions growing in your yard? Your yard is lacking calcium and the dandelion will put calcium back into the soil.
2.) Bugs will go to the sickest plants in the garden.
3.) Don’t use anything with “cide” in it. No pesticides, no herbicides.
4.) Illinois has the best soil, most of which is right here in Moultrie and Douglas counties.
5.) You should eat foods that have five or less ingredients and you should be able to know what they are, be able to pronounce those ingredients for it to be considered whole foods.
6.) If sugar is the first ingredient then maybe you should pass on the item.
7.) Make friends with a farmer so you know where your food is coming from and how it was grown.
You may visit her farm in Findlay beginning May 1, and it will be open Thursday-Monday.
