Unemployment down in all 12 Illinois metro areas for July

For the second month in-a-row, the unemployment rate decreased in all 12 Illinois metro areas for the year ending July 2025, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). Over-the-year, total non-farm jobs increased in five metropolitan areas, leading to consecutive months with year-over-year growth: Champaign (6 consecutive months); Chicago (13 consecutive months); Springfield (21 consecutive months).
“Illinois continues to showcase the resiliency of our economy, with unemployment declining across all 12 metro areas for the second month in a row and consecutive months of job gains in Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield,” said Deputy Governor Andy Manar. “The state remains committed to workforce development programs and resources that ensure communities across Illinois can fully benefit from them.”
Champaign-Urbana
The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.4 percent in July 2025 decreased from 5.0 percent in July 2024.
Over-the-year, non-farm employment increased by +1,300 to the total of 116,100 jobs.
Employment increased in the Government (+1,200), Leisure- Hospitality (+600), Private Education-Health Services (+100) and Mining-Construction (+100) sectors.
Payrolls were unchanged in Other Services, Transportation- Warehousing-Utilities, Wholesale Trade and Financial Activities.
Payroll employment decreased in Manufacturing (-200), Professional-Business Services (-200), Retail Trade (-200) and Information (-100) between July 2024 and July 2025.
