ARTHUR, Ill.— Volunteers, youth leaders, and families in the community are invited to events hosted by University of Illinois Extension as they gear up for the start of a new 4-H year. From tacos and vision boards to hands-on STEM activities, there’s something for everyone this fall.
All 4-H volunteers are invited to attend the annual Volunteer and Leadership Launch Meeting on Monday, Sept. 22, at the Arthur United Methodist Church, 128 E. Illinois St. in Arthur. No registration required. Shooting Sports Volunteers meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and all other volunteers meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tacos will be provided. Join to connect, share resources, and get energized for the new program year.
Youth from grades 8 to 12 are invited to attend the Emerging Leaders Federation Club. The launch meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, inside the Moultrie-Douglas Extension Office, 304 E. Progress St. in Arthur. Youth will partake in a vision board activity and officer elections. No registration required. Additional meetings will be held monthly, typically from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month.
This is a county-level leadership group where participants have an active voice in shaping the local 4-H program. Youth develop leadership skills, plan and run events, and gain experiences that look great on scholarship applications and resumes.
Families are invited to attend Mobile Minds: A 4-H STEM Family Experience from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Arthur United Methodist Church, 128 E. Illinois St. in Arthur. Free Casey’s pizza will be served. No registration required.
This free, public event features hands-on STEM activities including making glow-in-the-dark bouncy balls, building mini fans, and creating fiber-optic light figurines. Families can also explore the University of Illinois IBM Interactive STEM Bus and take part in the Mobile Science Learning Lab from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Participants will learn about the science of agriculture by viewing pollen and leaf stomata under microscopes, using a centrifuge to separate milk components, and getting an up-close look at friendly insects.
Activities are designed for youth ages 5 to 15, but all ages are welcome. Both 4-H and non-4-H families are encouraged to attend.
If you will need an accommodation in order to participate, please email [email protected]. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet your access needs.
