The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond cross country team competed in the annual Charleston High School Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6. The meet is run on the Panther Trail, the cross country course on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.
The girls took to the course first with 177 runners in the field. Knights’ senior Ruby Burton was the first to cross the finish line for ALAH coming in at eleventh with a time of 19:37.11. Fellow senior Kimberly Krutsinger was the next Knight in at twenty-eighth in 20:23.99. Both Ruby and Kimberly earned medals as they were in the top forty.
Freshman Gwen Herring, fifty-fifth, 21:52.18; sophomore Sophie Johnson, sixty-first, 22:04.8; and junior Embrey Reardon, eightieth, 22:51.10 were the other scoring runners for the Knights. Also competing for the girls were sophomore Keely Simpson with a time of 32:07.11 and junior Esmeralda Diaz who ran 33:06.17. All of the girls except freshman Gwen Herring as it was her first time on the course, ran faster than the times they recorded at this same meet in the 2024 season.
The girls’ team finished seventh in the team standings with 186 points in the eighteen team field which contained schools for all three IHSA classes.
With just three runners, the ALAH boys would not figure in the team scoring. There were twenty-two teams that did record a score and there were 243 boys in their race. While they couldn’t earn a team ranking they did come away with two medals earned by both the freshman boys, Beau Green who took fourteenth in 15:57.04 and Colton Snyder who was thirty-fourth with a time of 17:11.98. Senior Tristan Keagle may not have gotten a medal but he cut almost two minutes off his first cross country race with his time of 20:07.85.
The cross country team will run next Saturday, Sept. 13 at the annual Paxton Buckley Loda XC Invitational held at PBL High School. Meet time is 9 a.m.
