It was a challenging week for the East Prairie Hornets softball team, which dropped three games heading into regional play.
The Hornets opened against a strong Mahomet-Seymour squad, falling 16-3. Mahomet tallied 16 hits while Tuscola managed eight in the loss.
Next, East Prairie traveled to Mattoon to face St. John’s. The Hornets jumped out to an early lead when Aubrea Teak ripped a triple to right-center in the top of the first, scoring a run. St. John’s answered immediately with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and went on to secure a 12-2 victory. Teak, Isabel Bozarth, Dallis Wages, and Avery Cleland each recorded a hit for Tuscola.
The Hornets wrapped up the week at home against Charleston on eighth grade recognition day. The team battled through four innings, but Charleston’s bats came alive late, finishing with 18 hits to the Hornets’ four in a 14-1 decision.
Despite the tough stretch, the Hornets now turn their focus to the postseason. They open regional play Monday, Sept. 8, hosting Maroa-Forsyth at 4:30 p.m. in Ervin Park.
