ARCOLA – Saturday the Arcola boys basketball team dropped a 50-18 decision to Paris and Jan. 13 the Purple Riders fell to Paris 66-36 in two contests against Little Illini Conference teams.
Arcola, 9-8, returned to Lincoln Prairie Conference play Tuesday at Sullivan before playing in the conference tournament at Blue Ridge, starting Friday.
Marshall 50,
Arcola 18
Marshall, who improved to 6-9, including a 59-51 win over Paris, outscored the Purple Riders in every quarter and Arocla never led.
The Lions, coached by former Marshall standout Logan Eitel, scored the first seven points of the game before A.J. Stevens canned a three-pointer for Arcola. Marshall scored seven straight points from an 11-5 advantage with 1:19 left in the opening quarter to 18-5 with 5:31 left in the half.
Remi Roberts-McGeehon’s three-pointer made it 18-8, but the taller Marshall squad (average starter was 6-3) scored six straight points by three different players for a 24-8 advantage. Arcola trailed 25-11 at the half.
The Lions came out on fire, making 8-of-9 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range in the third quarter. Senior Payton McGuire had three, three-pointers in the third as Marshall led 46-15.
Remi Roberrts-McGeehon led Arcola with seven points and four rebounds. The Purple Riders had trouble shooting as they were 5-of-32 (.156) from the field. Rebounding also hurt as Marshall won the battle 26-12.
McGuire led the Lions with five three-pointers and 19 points, while 6-4 Garrett Pugh had 16 points. Zach Jones, a 6-6 sophomore came off the bench to lead the Lions in rebounds with seven.
Paris 66,
Arcola 36
Paris, a team that improved to 8-10, scored 12 of the first 13 points before Kaden Hohlbauch netted a three-pointer for Arcola’s first basket of the game with 2:23 left in the opening quarter. The Purple Riders trailed 18-4 after one quarter. The Tigers took a 15-point lead, 21-6 early in the second.
Arcola battled back to within seven on the strength of an 8-0 run, making it 21-12. The Purple Riders trailed just 24-16 when the Tigers scored the final nine points of the half or a commanding 33-16 advantage.
Arcola did not get closer than 14 the rest of the game and Paris went from leading 47-30 late in the third to 57-32 early in the fourth.
Brody Phillips and Haris Mayhal led the Purple Riders in scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Neither team shot free throws well as Paris was 12-of-26 (.462) and Arcola was 12-24.
