LSA, with a barrage of three pointers and a full court trap press, steamrolled the Devils 69–27 on their own court. Villa Grove entered Friday night’s game 0–5 at home and have yet to find that elusive first win.
The closest the Devils came was early in the first quarter with a score of 9–11. Seven of those nine points came from Eamon Reedy, and Thomas Vandeventer got the other two at the line. Responding to this, LSA sank six threes despite heavy contest on most and ended the quarter, leading 23–12.
Quarter two consisted of countless turnovers that started on the Devils’ first possession. The ball going overhead, straight out of bounds, or sometimes even directly to the other team, LSA smothered every passing lane and turned that hard defense into easy offense.
A defensive strategy that pressured the inbounder on press, and trapped the ball at half court, disoriented Villa Grove enough they were never able to set up their offense. With no offense and an ineffective defense, the Devils limped to locker rooms down 17–43 at half.
Scoring only nine points in the last two quarters, comeback was nowhere on the menu. More turnovers and every shot met with a hand in the face, Blue Devil offense was nowhere to be found.
LSA (Unity Christian in Decatur) out scored VG 26–9 in the second half and continued to rain it in from deep until triple 0. Subs played out the entire fourth quarter and the ball found the net only once for Villa Grove.
LSA’s quality of play had no noticeable change, and scored 13 in both the third and the fourth. A 69–27 loss at home totals the Blue Devil record to 7–15 being 2–5 in conference play. The Devils look to snap a six game losing streak Tuesday night Feb. 10, Traveling to Argenta-Oreana to face the 8–17 bombers.
