You can never know too much science. Students at Atwood-Hammond Grade School enjoyed an engaging K-8 Science Assembly on Friday, March 6. The program was presented by the St. Louis Science Center and funded through fall fundraiser money raised by the students themselves.
Now this wasn’t like Back to the Future with the wild scientist Doc Brown, but there was a Mad Scientist with helpers Dawson Crist, Piper Quick and Wyatt Norton. He spun a cup of water in a full circle above his head, showing how gravity and centripetal force kept the water inside.
There was also a fire in a tube experiment revealed convection as flames spiraled upward through a clear column. The baking soda and vinegar “genie in the bottle” created carbon dioxide gas rapidly inflating a balloon and delighting students with hands-on chemistry in action.
The crowd was wild with excitement for the culminating experiment making elephant toothpaste as the Mad Scientist proved that science isn’t magic, but some magic is science!
A special thank you to Principal Chris Forman for providing information and a picture for the article. He is excellent help when we are unable to attend.
