ARTHUR – The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond baseball team started their season 2-1. The Knights nipped Altamont 7-6 and topped Fisher 6-1, while the only loss was a 5-1 game to Armstrong Potomac. All three games were non-conference contests on Friday, Thursday and Wednesday respectively.

There was no scoring through the first five innings in fact the Knight had only one hit, a
Lead off single by Kody Burdick in the bottom of the third. In the sixth the scoreless tie was broken the Trojans first three batters reached on a hit batsmen, and back-to-back walks followed by a sacrifice fly. Another run scored on an error as Armstrong-Potomac scored two runs without a hit. Both teams had just one hit each through six innings when the Trojans led off the seventh with a single and with one-out back-to-back walks occurred and with two outs Armstrong’s Traxton Roberts came through with a three-run single to left.
Trailing 5-0 the Knights led off the seventh with a double by John Williams. With one out and Williams on third Max Boddy reached on an error as Williams scored the lone run for ALAH. After a walk, the game ended on a 4-6-3 double play.

Thursday
The Knights trailed 5-0 after three innings and 5-1 after four when they erupted for six runs in the fifth. It all started with one out when Donovan Vanasduoll and Jansen Burnett singled. Vanasudoll advanced to third on a fly out. With two outs Williams walked and Marcus Otto followed with an RBI single. Boddy doubled to right field, scoring three. Lucas Butcher reached on an error and Logan Schrock singled to right. Burdick reached on an error to load the bases when Vanausdoll drove in the final run with a grounder to left.
With the Knights leading 7-5 in the seventh Altamont pulled to within one on a home run by Brayden Elam to start the inning. With one out there was a walk and he was erased on a fielder’s choice for the second out. An error put runners at first and second when Boddy gathered up a ground ball and stepped on second for the final out and a Knights win.
ALAH at Fisher, Wednesday
Strong pitching by Williams and Landon Franklin helped the Knights top Fisher by five. Williams threw 68 pitches, 48 for strikes, in five innings and allowed no hits and no walks with seven strikeouts, while Franklin threw 37 pitches, 23 for strikes. He allowed two hits and one run in two innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
ALAH scored all the runs it would need with a four run second. With one out Vanasudoll singled, Franklin walked and Wyatt Hilligoss drove them in with a triple to center. Williams was hit by a pitch. Hiilligoss scored on a ground out by Marcus Otto. Williams scored on an error as Boddy reached on an error for the 4-0 lead.

ACS baseball opens season with a loss To Mattoon
The Arthur Christian Conquering Riders were on the road for their first game as they traveled to face the Greenwaves and it was Mattoon who got off to a fast start scoring six runs in the first inning which helped them defeat ACS 10-0 on Friday.
In the bottom of the first, Mattoon had three singles, scoring three runs, Cody Kuhns induced a hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, and one double, scoring two runs.
The Greenwaves added to their lead in the bottom of the third with a homerun scoring two more runs.
Kuhns led things off on the rubber for ACS and the lefty gave up six hits and eight runs (seven earned) over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking four.
Ian Herschberger went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the team in hits.
The Conquering Riders JV were also defeated by Mattoon 1-12 last Friday.
ACS will host ALAH this Thursday.
