On Saturday, June 20, the Tuscola Torpedoes Swim Team had their first home swim meet of the season. The Tuscola team swam against a very large-in-numbers Champaign team called the Sholem Sharks.
Even though the Tuscola team had many great races, they just couldn’t compete with the sheer number of swimmers from the Champaign team. One of the great races included was the first race of the meet. This race was a mixed, which means both boys and girls, 8 and under, 120 meter medley relay race. A medley relay race is when each member of the relay swims a different stroke.
The Tuscola team included Dawson Lacine, who started the relay in backstroke, Layla Macku swam the next leg of the race in breastroke; after that Bailey Macku (pictured top right) swam butterfly, then finishing the relay and taking first place in the first event was Gideon Williams in freestyle.
The final score after all the races were complete was Sholem Sharks 757.5 points to Tuscola Torpedoes 300.5 points. This was Tuscola’s second meet of the season and their second loss.
The Torpedoes swim again next Saturday, June 27, in Champaign to a different Champaign swim team called the Indian Acres Swim Club. They then have a Saturday off for the Fourth of July before their final home swim meet of the season against an Effingham swim team.
The Tuscola team could really use some hometown support on July 11 when they have to compete against another big swim team. So if you find yourself with some free time that Saturday morning and want to come check out our newly renovated pool, the swim team would love the encouragement, plus we do have a great refreshment stand at our home meets. The first race starts at 8:30 a.m. and the meet ends around 11:30 a.m.
