A Life Well Lived: Celebrating My Grandmother’s 95 Years
Charlene Smith holds just one of the cards she has received this past year.

Ninety-five years is more than a birthday. It’s a celebration of a life filled with hard work, love, sacrifice, and an impact that reaches far beyond one family. My grandmother, Charlene Smith, has never sought recognition, yet anyone who grew up in our small town of Cerro Gordo knows her name and remembers her smile.
For more than 50 years, she owned and operated the local grocery store. It wasn’t just a place to buy bread and milk, it was where neighbors gathered, stories were shared, and everyone was treated like family. She knew her customers by name, cared about their lives, and never hesitated to help someone in need. She wasn’t just a business owner; she was the heart of our community.
This past year, Brianne entered her into the Love Letters to the Elderly program with the hope she might receive a few kind notes. Instead, she was overwhelmed with nearly 1,000 letters and cards from people around the world. Complete strangers took the time to thank her, encourage her, and remind her that her generation matters. Watching her read those heartfelt messages was one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever witnessed. They confirmed what our family has always known…that a life lived with kindness creates ripples that reach farther than we can imagine.
To me, she is so much more than my grandmother. She is my hero. She taught me the value of honesty, compassion, hard work, and treating every person with dignity. The woman I am today is because of her example. Her strength has carried our family through life’s challenges, and her love has been the foundation on which generations have grown.
As we celebrate her 95th birthday, we aren’t simply honoring the years she has lived. We are celebrating the countless lives she has touched, the community she helped build, and the legacy she continues to leave behind.
Happy 95th Birthday, Grandma. Thank you for showing us what a life of purpose, generosity, and unconditional love truly looks like. You have been the heart of our family, an icon in our town, and an inspiration to everyone fortunate enough to know you. We love you more than words can ever express.
There will be an Open House celebrating Charlene’s birthday hosted by her family on Sunday, July 26 from 2 – 5 pm at the Cerro Gordo American Legion (220 E Wait Street), the building where her business was for 50 years.
