June meeting held for Arthur American Legion Auxiliary

The monthly meeting of the Arthur American Legion Auxiliary Unit #479 was held at Arthur United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 16 at 6 p.m.
President Linda Perrine called the meeting to order with 3 raps of the gavel. Chaplain Arlone Doan lead us in an opening prayer. We said the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and stood in silence in honor of our dead.
Roll call of officers was given. There were 5 officers and 2 members at large making a total of 7 members present.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Billie Bernius handed out a list of expenditures and income and our present balance. Our poppy sales was included in that amount.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Arlone reported that our poppy sales were excellent this year. People were very generous. People of all ages were happy to donate. We would like to thank all people from far and wide for their generous donations!
Diana Gay reported that the 3 Girls State delegates are McKena Blaudow, Shelbey Grimsley and Emmalee Reel. They will leave Sunday, June 21 for a week on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.
Also we received a very generous donation of $400 from Arthur Rotary Club to pay for one girls application. Thank you for that!
We passed around an article that was in The County Chronicle that listed the winners of the Americanism Essay contest that we sponsored. Three local units, Atwood, Arthur and Lovington, all participated in it. Our chairman, Marty Jones, reported that Nathan Rafferty went on to win at the District level also. Very proud of him.
Historian Gaye Davis sent the yearly history in to the Department in May.
Linda reported that we had at least 200 flags broken or destroyed by the recent storm She will need to order at least one more gross. We put out 600.
We will put flags out again for the 4th of July.
Our Auxiliary has been invited to ride on a float in Arthur’s 250 celebration of our country in the parade celebration with local veterans. The parade and fireworks will be on Saturday, June 27. Parade at 2 p.m.
There was no unfinished business.
Chaplain said a closing prayer for peace and for protection of our troops. Let service to the community, state and nation be ever a main objective of the American Legion Auxiliary and its members.
The meeting was adjourned with 1 rap of the gavel. Our next meeting will be Sept. 15.
