Avery Herschberger delivered a standout performance at the plate this week, but ACS Conquering Riders settled for a split in two games, falling to Casey-Westfield 7-4 on Tuesday before holding off Cerro Gordo-Bement 11-9 on Monday.
In last Tuesday’s matchup, Herschberger accounted for half of ACS’s runs, blasting two solo home runs in a loss to the Lady Warriors. She went deep in the first and again in the fifth, showcasing her power to center and left field.
Casey-Westfield took control early, capitalizing on defensive miscues in the top of the first inning. Two errors led to runs, while Ella Whitacre and Gyllyane Gilbert each delivered run-scoring doubles as the Lady Warriors built a five-run cushion.
ACS responded in the bottom of the first when Herschberger homered and Elsie Beever followed with a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 5-3. Despite Herschberger’s second home run in the fifth, the Conquering Riders couldn’t fully recover.
Beever provided stability in the circle, tossing six innings of relief while allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out four. Lilian Beever took the loss, though none of the five runs she allowed in the first inning were earned. Casey-Westfield’s Ava Goble earned the win, striking out 12 over a complete game effort.
A day earlier, the Conquering Riders found themselves on the winning side of another high-scoring game, fending off a late rally to defeat Cerro Gordo-Bement 11-9.
After trailing early, ACS took control with a strong middle innings surge. Lilian Beever’s two-run single in the second gave the Riders a 3-2 lead, and the teams traded runs before ACS broke things open in the fifth. Abigail Sanders drove in a run, an error added another, and Beever capped the inning with a two-run homer to make it 8-4.
Herschberger added to the lead in the sixth with a three-run home run, pushing the advantage to seven runs.
CGB refused to go quietly, erupting for five runs in the seventh. Maggie Petty hit a two-run homer and Mya Durbin followed with a bases-clearing triple to bring the Broncos within striking distance, but ACS held on to secure the win.
Herschberger, Beever, and the Herschberger lineup each collected two hits in the victory, with Beever and Herschberger driving in three runs apiece. The Conquering Riders also showed aggressiveness on the basepaths, swiping eight bases and drawing six walks.
Lilie Herschberger earned the win in relief, striking out six over five and two-thirds innings.
Despite the split, ACS showed both offensive firepower and resilience, highlighted by Herschberger’s big week at the plate and a lineup capable of producing a vast number of runs.
