On Tuesday, April 21 the Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond high school track and field teams competed in the long running Tri-County Invitational hosted by Sullivan High School. The girls took third place and the boys were fourth in the team standings.
There were several outstanding performances, but the highlight of the meet was the setting of new school and meet records by both the girls’ and boys’ 4 X 200 meter relays. For the girls, Grace Romine, Macee Boddy, Summer Melton, and Bella Romine ran a time of 1:48.51. This bested the previous ALAH record of 1:50.17 that was established by Grace Romine, Skyler Graham, Melton, and Bella Romine. The time also broke a twelve year old meet record set by Sullivan in 2014 at 1:49.5. The new record currently ties the relay for fifth in the state rankings in Class 1A.
The Knights boys’ 4 X 200 meter relay also set school and meet records at the Tri-County Invitational last week. Breaking their own record of 1:31.28 set last year, Payton Warrior, Cruz Hale, Easton Frederick, and Daylon Doggett ran a 1:30.67 at the meet. The quartet beat the second place team by almost four seconds!! Their time broke the previous record of 1:34.04, again by almost four seconds. The old record was sent in 2024 by Sullivan. The boys’ 4 X 2 is currently ranked number two in Class 1A
This same foursome broke their own school record in the 4 X 100 meter relay at Sullivan with a clocking of 43.37. Their previous record was set in 2025 at 43.58. The 4 X 1 is currently ranked third in Class 1A.
Besides the two winning relays, senior Easton Frederick won the 200 meters in a PR time of 23.32.
The boys scored in eleven of the fifteen events they were entered in and scored multiple places in seven of those events.
The girls scored in sixteen of the seventeen events they competed in and multiple athletes scored in four events,
Proving the importance of field events in a track and field meet, at the Sullivan meet the throwers, Alex Clark, Rylie Ward, and Ashby Coblentz scored twenty points for the team and the jumps group, Leighton Poulos, Bella Romine, and Summer Melton, long and triple jump, and Zoey Mendoza, high jump added sixteen points to the team’s total.
The ALAH teams were to compete in the 40th Annual Tuscola Open on Friday, April 24. The girls would then have their turn at Monticello at the Lady Sages’ Invitational on Friday, May 1.
