ALAH High School girls’ track and field in two meets last week – win 7-team meet at W-L

On Tuesday, April 14, the Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond high school girls’ track and field team competed in a five team meet at Sullivan. The Knights’ finished in second in the team standings with 89 points behind host Sullivan with 109. Cerro Gordo Bement was third with 63, followed by fourth place Warrensburg-Latham with 47, and Central A & M was fifth with 39.
The girls scored in all fourteen events they competed in with multiple athletes scoring in six of those events. Senior standout distance runner Ruby Burton lowered her school record of 2:30.35 set just the past Saturday at the high school Invite to 2:27.76. Ruby took first in the event also. Other meet highlights on the track were Sophie Johnson ran a career best in the 800 meters at 2:33.30 which was good for second place and Zoey Mendoza had a career best of 29.08 in the 200 meters.
In the throws, Alex Clark and Rylie Ward doubled up in the shot put and discus with Alex finishing second in both and Rylie taking fourth in both. Ashby Coblentz threw a career best of 28’ 7.5” in the shot put and Jada Borntrager had a career best of 47’ 10” in the discus.
In the triple jump, Leighton Poulos had a PR of 31’ 6” good for fifth place and Summer Melton and Bella Romine tied at 32’ 6” for fourth place in the event.
On Thursday, April 16, the ALAH girls went to Warrensburg-Latham for a seven team meet. The Knights came away on top of the team standings. They scored 132 points to runner up host team Cardinals who had 116. Sangamon Valley was third with 95, followed by fourth place Central A & M with 60, fifth place Argenta-Oreana with 38, sixth place was Meridian with 22, and Decatur St. Teresa scored 18 points for seventh place.
The ALAH girls scored in every event they were entered in and had multiple placings in six events. They were not entered in the 3200 meters, the 100 meter or 300 meter hurdles or the triple jump.
Individual event winners were Bella Romine in the long jump with a leap of 16’ 1.75”, Grace Romine in the 200 meters at 28.08; and Ruby Burton in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.39. Jada Borntrager bettered her discus throw from Tuesday to 49’ 11”. Two relays finished in first place – the 4 X 200 meter with Norma Mendoza, Keely Simpson, Zoey Mendoza, and Macee Boddy at 1:54.46 and the 4 X 100 meter relay of Summer Melton, Macee Boddy, Leighton Poulos, and Bella Romine clocking a 52 seconds flat.
The ALAH boys were to compete in the annual Monticello Invitational on Friday, April 17. Results are below.
Next up on the schedule for both the high school boys and girls teams is the Tri-County Invitational at Sullivan on Tuesday, April 21 that features eleven teams for Douglas, Moultrie, and Shelby counties. On Friday, April 24, both teams will compete in the 40th Annual Tuscola Open.

ALAH High boys’ track and field at annual Monticello Invitational

The annual Monticello Boys’ Invitational track and field meet has been going on for many years and always provides great competition for area athletes that this year represented eighteen different schools for all IHSA classes. The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond boys’ team was one of those teams competing on Friday, April 17. The meet is a bit unique as no team scores are kept.
The Knights had some stellar performances and tallied fifteen PRs in individual events. The highest finishers for ALAH were senior Easton Frederick in the 400 meters with a time of 51.57 and freshman Beau Green with a PR of 2:05.84 in the 800 meters.
Another unique event about the meet is that there is a 4000 meter distance medley relay that consists of a 1200 meter leg, a 400 meter leg, an 800 meter leg and is finished with a 1600 meter leg. The Knights’ team for this relay, Tristan Keagle, David Briseno, Colton Snyder, and Beau Green finished in third place with a time of 12:22.17. Shelbyville took first at 12:11.37 and Stanford Olympia was second in 12:12.53. There were nine schools entered in the relay.
ALAH had two other relays that finished in the top eight, the 4 X 100 meter relay of Justin Schrock, Cooper Shoemaker, Brennon Hutson, and Ismael Corona with a time of 47.28 and the 4 X 200 meter relay with Jase Kingery, Cannon Doggett, Carson Reed, and Faemus Davison running a time of 1:38.91.
Knights that finished in the top eight in individual events were Payton Warrior, 400 meters, 53.15, PR; Trey Strode, 300 meter hurdles, 43.44, PR and high jump, 5’ 10.75”, PR; Cooper Shoemaker, high jump, 5’ 8.75”, and Daylon Doggett, long jump, 20’ 5.75”, PR.
