TUSCOLA – The Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond boys and girls track team placed third in the 17-team 40th annual Tuscola Open last Friday. The boys scored 58 points in the meet won by Tuscola with 105 points, while the Cerro Gordo/Bement boys team was 13th with 10 points. The ALAH girls scored 72 points in the meet won by Sullivan with 78.5 points. The Arcola boys had Remi Roberts-McGeehon win the 400 with a personal record time of 52.11 in the meet held under ideal weather conditions.
Boys
For the ALAH boys freshman Beau Green won both the 800 and 1,600 with personal best times of 2:03.2 and 4:34.86 respectively. Green won the 800 by 1.3 seconds and the 1,600 by 1:11.
“We are two competitors and I went out fast,” said Green of the 800. “I really didn’t know if I had it in me. Once I caught up to him I knew he was hurting and so I picked it up and the backstretch I could tell he was fading so I took off and finished hard.”
Green said it was his pr by 1 or 2 seconds.
“It feels great,” said Green. “It is intimidating racing those older guys, but I just try and do my best.”
The ALAH 4×400 relay team of Peyton Warrior, Easton Frederick, Tristan Keagle, Cruz Hale finished off the meet by winning by 1.94 seconds with a time of 3:32.01.
“Easton does a great job of getting out hard and runs a great open 400 and so I felt confident that he would get us in a great position. It came down to the middle two guys (Peyton Warrior and Keagle) and they didn’t disappoint. I knew my second leg would do great. I knew my third leg would hold on and he found that gear and got ahead. All I had to do was get that baton and get out in front of the second place kid and then I knew I had it. I definitely expected Villa Grove to be close.”
Arcola’s Remi Roberts-McGeehon won the 400 with a personal best 52.11
“The Cerro Gordo/Bement kid (Quintin Nevius) was in lane four and he was the best in our heat,” said Roberts-McGeehon. “My goal was just to stay out in front of him, but let him pass me on the curve (200 meters left) and after that I was going to go and I got it. It was a really good race and really fun. My start was one of the best I have had this year. It felt different after last week. I don’t know what I did right. It feels so great to win. It is what I have been working for this entire season. My teammates and coaches have been pushing me.”
In the Purple Riders 4×100 which has three baseball players in it with Brody Phillips, Canton Wesch and Ronnie Vega in it. They placed fifth with a personal best time of 45.28.
“It was not even close to where we want to be, but seeing that three of the runners are also in baseball we have not been running for a week and a half. It is a personal record by .3 and we will take it. We are getting better each meet and have been working on our handoffs, but it is kind of hard when you don’t practice for a week and a half and then show up and do a tack meet. When you don’t practice for a week and a half and then show up and do a track meet. We are turning in the right direction. With some practice we should be able to get where we want. “
Girls
For the Knights the 4×200 team of Grace Romine, Macelyn Boddy, Summer Melton and Bella Romine won with a time of 1:48.58, 1.55 better than the second place team.
“I trusted our girls,” said Bella Romine. “We have been working really hard and we cathay just changed the way we did our handoffs recently. It was different. We did it last year, but I think it worked out well in our favor. We did more of blind handoff instead of looking back and waiting. Throughout the season we have had a few different girls here or there, but I really think this is a great group of girls. It is a great feeling to win it.”
